How to check you are not missing benefits or support in the UK
5 min read
Every year a very large amount of UK support goes unclaimed simply because people assume they will not qualify. Entitlement does not depend only on being out of work — plenty of working households, pensioners and carers are eligible for money they are not receiving. A free check takes about ten minutes.
1. Run a free entitlement calculator first
Independent calculators from Turn2us and entitledto ask about income, savings, housing costs and household make-up, then list what you may be able to claim. They are free, anonymous and far quicker than reading eligibility rules yourself.
Have your recent payslips, rent or mortgage amount, council tax bill and savings balances to hand so the result is accurate.
2. Know the most commonly missed entitlements
These are the ones that repeatedly show up in unclaimed-support figures. Even a partial award can be worth hundreds a year, and some act as a gateway to other help.
- Pension Credit — heavily underclaimed, and it unlocks other support for pensioners.
- Council Tax Reduction and the single-person discount.
- Attendance Allowance, PIP and Carer's Allowance for health conditions and caring responsibilities.
- Child Benefit — worth registering for even at higher incomes to protect National Insurance credits.
- Marriage Allowance, which lets one partner transfer part of their personal tax allowance.
- Free childcare hours, Healthy Start and free school meals where eligible.
3. Check tax as well as benefits
Tax overpayments are their own quiet loss. Check your tax code on your payslip against your circumstances, and claim work-from-home or uniform expenses if they apply to you.
You can claim back overpaid tax for previous years through HMRC directly — you never need to pay a company a percentage to do it for you.
4. Get free, regulated advice if it is complicated
Citizens Advice, StepChange and National Debtline give free help with entitlements, debt and negotiating with creditors. If a company asks for an upfront fee to claim benefits or write off debt, treat that as a warning sign.

Ai Money Saver checks your income and outgoings — typed in, from a bank statement, or talked through — and shows where you're likely overpaying before you pay anything.
Frequently asked questions
- Will claiming benefits affect my other income?
- Some benefits interact, which is exactly why a calculator helps — it models the combination rather than one payment in isolation.
- Do I have to be unemployed to claim anything?
- No. Many entitlements — Council Tax Reduction, Universal Credit, Marriage Allowance, childcare support — apply to working households.
- Are entitlement calculators safe to use?
- The Turn2us and entitledto calculators are run by established organisations, are free, and do not require you to identify yourself to get an estimate.
